Beginning Tuesday, March 4, Wheelock Library (3722 North 26th Street) will close temporarily to update its heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system.
While the library is closed, lobby services will be offered three times a week for patrons to return materials, pick up holds, and check out new materials. Patrons can also move their holds to one of the seven other Tacoma Public Library (TPL) locations within the system while Wheelock is closed.
Things to know:
- Limited lobby services (holds pick-up and materials return), will be offered at Wheelock during these times:
- Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 5–7 p.m.
- Saturdays from 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
- Wheelock's collection will be unavailable during construction, which may make hold wait times longer for all patrons
- Book drops will be closed while repairs are underway. The closest book drop locations are at Main or Swasey.
- Materials checked out will automatically renew three times unless there is a hold placed
- Tacoma Public Library does not charge fines for overdue items
- To extend your checkout, call library staff at any location
- Patrons may place holds, utilize services, browse the collections, and attend programs at other libraries while Wheelock is closed.
- Both the newly remodeled Main Library at 1102 S Tacoma Ave, or Swasey Library at 7001 Sixth Avenue are just three miles from the Proctor neighborhood.
- Patrons who choose to pick up their holds at another library can learn how to do so by following this step-by-step guide, opens a new window.
"Wheelock is our busiest location and holds much of our collection, so we know this is a disruption for patrons and we are grateful for their patience as we make these needed updates," stated Public Information Officer Mariesa Bus. "We hope that the lobby service will help to meet some of our patrons' needs during the closure and give them a chance to visit with staff. We encourage Wheelock patrons to visit our seven other library locations for uninterrupted access to a full range of services and programs," Bus continued.
Along with updates to the HVAC that will improve the building's comfort and energy efficiency, TPL plans to update the teen area while Wheelock is closed.
Wheelock is anticipated to be closed through the spring. TPL will share a targeted reopening date as soon as possible.
