TPL retires music CD collection

After carefully evaluating trends in music CD usage and production, Tacoma Public Library has decided to retire music CDs from our collection. Over the years, we’ve observed a steady decline in CD checkouts. By retiring this collection, we can create additional space in our libraries to better accommodate the growing number of in-person visitors. This change also allows us to focus our budget on resources and materials that are in higher demand.

By the numbers

  • Fewer than 1% of active TPL patrons check out music CDs.
  • Music CDs circulate at half the rate of DVDs and books.
  • In 2024, more than 50% of our music CD collection was never checked out, while another 25% circulated only once.

We are not alone. This is a reflection of broader trends as music CD production, sales, and circulation continue to decline. Streaming and vinyl records have surpassed CD sales, and music CDs are becoming harder to procure through library vendors. Libraries across the nation, such as those in Round Rock, Alameda, and Pima County, have also retired their music CD collections.

When will this transition take place?

In February 2025, Main Library reopened without music CDs in its collection. Fern Hill Library removed its music CDs later in the month to make way for a new teen area.

Starting in April 2025, TPL's remaining six libraries will remove their music CD collections.

What are the alternatives for music CD users?

We understand that some patrons will miss our music CDs. We have several alternatives available:

  • Access free music streaming services like Hoopla. TPL staff are happy to assist patrons in exploring streaming options. You can listen to streaming music on your own devices, or public computers using borrowed headsets available at the desk.
  • Borrow CDs from neighboring libraries, such as Seattle Public Library and Pierce County Library System, as a reciprocal borrower using your TPL card.
  • Once CDs are no longer available at TPL, you can request an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) for CDs from other library systems.

Can I buy the CDs?

CDs of sellable quality are included in individual branch sales, with proceeds supporting programs like the Summer Reading Challenge.

Summary

This decision reflects our commitment to responsibly serving the evolving needs of our community. By embracing change, Tacoma Public Library continues to adapt and grow as a resource for all patrons. By retiring music CDs, we can reclaim valuable space in our libraries for seating areas and spaces dedicated to children and teens and reallocate our budget to meet the growing demand for items such as graphic novels and eResources. We appreciate your understanding as we continue to adapt to the changing needs of our community.
