On Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024, the Pierce County Council proclaimed March 2–9, 2024, as “Read Across America Week” in Pierce County, Washington. Tacoma Public Library Director, Kate Larsen, along with Pierce County Library System Executive Director, Gretchen Caserotti, and Puyallup Public Library Director, Nicole Erickson, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the library systems of Pierce County.
Launched in 1998 by the National Education Association (NEA), Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading. This annual reading motivation and awareness program calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading with the theme: Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers.
In her remarks, Kate Larsen said, "Tacoma Public Library has a vision of being radically welcoming: a trusted community hub where all people can find joy, compassion, and inspiration. Connections, knowledge sharing, and support are fostered in public libraries. This week, as we celebrate Read Across America Week, we celebrate libraries as safe and welcoming to people and their ideas."
