Preserve Your Memories at the Tacoma Public Library’s Memory Labs
The Tacoma Public Library’s Memory Lab is a fantastic resource for anyone looking to preserve their cherished memories. Located at the Moore and Wheelock branches, the Memory Lab offers a do-it-yourself space where you can digitize your old photos, documents, videos, and audio recordings. This service is perfect for those who want to save their personal stories for future generations. Whether it’s converting old VHS tapes, scanning family photos, or recording oral histories, the Memory Lab provides the tools you need to keep your memories safe. The Memory Lab was made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services with support from the Memory Lab Network overseen by the DC Public Library.
The Memory Lab is equipped with a variety of tools to help you digitize different types of media. You can use the VCR to convert VHS video tape, as well as a DVD player to convert DVDs. The cassette/CD deck allows you to digitize audio from cassette tapes and CDs. For photos and documents, the digital scanner can handle slide film, negatives, film prints, and printed documents. Once digitized, you can save your files to your personal storage device or cloud storage account, ensuring they are preserved for years to come. Don't forget to bring an external hard drive or 16 gigabyte memory stick.
The library provides online resources, including an orientation and training guide, as well as the Memory Lab Handbook. The Memory Lab is a valuable service that helps the community preserve its history and personal stories.
The Memory Lab will be available at Wheelock, Moore, and the upcoming Maker Lab at the Main Branch.
