On November 14, 1940, 2550 birds of the 5,200 turkeys at Southworth's Turkey Farm are being prepared for Thanksgiving orders placed by staff at McChord Field, Fort Lewis and Camp Murray. The Southworth brothers, Roy, W. H. and Charles, had raised turkeys for market for ten years at their Brookdale farm, an area located east of McChord Field and south of the Parkland Golf Course.
